Facts About Eiffel Tower
One of the most iconic symbols of Paris France is the Eiffel Tower. Except for the Statue of Liberty in New York, no other symbol in the world is as well-known as the Eiffel Tower. Knowing a few facts about the Eiffel Tower will make your visit to this beautiful place even more enjoyable.
An amazing fact about the Eiffel Tower is that when it was first built in 1889 for the Universal Exhibition. At that time it was not considered a beautiful feature in the Paris skyline. In fact the famous author Guy de Maupassant ate there rather than having to look at it. In fact when Gustave Eiffel built the magnificent structure, it was only meant to be temporary. Many people thought it ruined the beauty of the Paris skyline. Luckily for us, the French decided to leave the Eiffel Tower so people a century later could enjoy its beauty.
Now no one would dare mention taking down one of Paris’s most famous attractions. This lovely structure is visited by millions of tourists annually. Unfortunately, some people have visited the site, climbed the tower, and jumped to their deaths. Some of them hoped to fly but dropped to their deaths instead. Now there is plenty of security to keep lunatics from trying to be the first one to fly from the tower.
There are three levels of the Tower. The tallest level is 905 feet high. For many years before the Empire State Building, the Eiffel Tower was the tallest building in the world. The top of the tower stands 1,063 feet high. This high peak is not available for tourists.
The second level is 376 feet high and is separated from the first level by 359 steps. If you are in good physical condition, walking up these stairs is really fun. For all of the couch potatoes in the world, there is an elevator. This is a much slower way to travel because the elevator is always busy and the lines can be daunting. If you can stand the wait, the elevator ride is a short few minutes. There is a restaurant on this second level. The Jules Verne Restaurant is one of the best restaurants in Paris and offers a stunning view of Paris at night. Reservations are strongly recommended even in the off season. This restaurant is very expensive so be ready to pay for your perfect night at the tower.
The first level of the Eiffel Tower is 187 feet off the ground. There are 360 steps to this level. Of course, there is also an elevator with the ubiquitous line of tourists. This level has a post office where you can send friends a post card from the Eiffel Tower. How neat is that?
During the high tourist season, the double decker elevators are always full. If you wish to wait in line for the elevators you must not have a fear of heights and you better be patient. Waits can last for two or more hours.
Visiting the Eiffel Tower is a must for anyone who tours Paris France. Having a few facts about the Eiffel Tower before you come will make your visit unforgettable.
